Hi LH Parents!
Happy almost St Patrick’s Day! We will be having some St. Patrick Day themed fun this week before we dive into our final week of Anonymous questions.
I saved the toughest questions for the last week. This week the questions are:
Where does the Bible say abortion is wrong?
don’t know if this counts, but what does the bible say about lgbt+? (being lgbt+, having lgbt+ friends, etc.)
Not so much a question, but a concept: Talking about faith feels awkward around my parents even though they’re Christian themselves. I always feel oddly weirded out slightly uncomfortable for some reason.
These are certainly difficult topics and as the parent/guardian of these students I think it is important that you know what they are asking and what we will be talking about. I always get a little extra stressed when talking about LGBTQ issues. For students that may be struggling with their sexual or gender identity I am cautious and want to make sure they know that God loves them, and that Lighthouse (and the Church) is a place where they belong.
One resource the Covenant offers is Embrace (covchurch.org/embrace). Embrace is a suite of human sexuality discipleship resources and learning experiences which are in harmony with the adopted position of the Evangelical Covenant Church, the center of which is “Faithfulness in heterosexual marriage, celibacy in singleness—these constitute the Christian standard.” There are webinars, books and tons of articles available. I am always available to talk more. If you would like to see the transcript of what I will be teaching (either before or after Wednesday), I am happy to send it to you.
For following up with your student after Wednesday you may want to ask if they were surprised someone asked these questions. You could also ask if there was a question over the last three weeks that they found interesting or really stuck out to them.
SUMMER CAMP: Thank you to those that already responded! If you would like to help Tim and I as we think about summer camp, please consider filling out our survey. It is 5 quick questions. I am hoping to do something in the last couple weeks of July. Email me for the link to the survey
